Some people think that if companies prohibit sending email to staff on weekends or during other time out of office hours, staff’s dissatisfaction with their companies will decrease. Others think that will not reduce the overall dissatisfaction among staff.

What do you think?

It certainly is annoying that work-related emails pop up during after-work hours and interrupts our personal time. In response, companies are advised to prohibit sending work-related email to their staffs out of office hours, in particular, on weekends. Although the ban intends to reduce dissatisfaction among staffs, it is unlikely to actually make stuffs less disgruntled.

The first reason is simple. Many companies have more than one way to communicate work-related information. In China, an APP called DingDing is developed exclusively for the communication about work issues. Users send messages and make announcements on group noticeboards, and this APP delivers information faster than email does. This is the irony: emailing may be banned; other means will be used and work better, however. In addition, even if any way of telecommunication is not allowed, companies can ask their staffs to be physically present in a conference room for some time on weekends and to discuss work as part of the work arrangement. Anyway, if an employer wants to take advantage of staff’s private time, there are ways to do so.

The other major reason is that work encroaches on employees’ private time in multiple ways. As a matter of fact, workers may be more annoyed by incompetent colleagues or unattainable goals than by a few unexpected emails. In other words, employees may disregard the inbox on weekends or at night; they however cannot seem to completely detach themselvesfrom work. For example, although a friend of mine does not check his other phone, the one used exclusively for work, when he is off-duty, he does not feel less discontent with his job, and I often hear his grievances about the incapable coworkers and their inflated ego.

Admittedly, the ban on weekend emailing will be welcome. Workers will at least have one fewer irritant. When the phone tweets, they can be sure that the message is from a friend or family and feel less stressed. Also, they will not have the disappointment that they expect a friend’s message but receive a work email.

However, that is just not enough. There are more changes to make.
